Holland (the Netherlands) 400 years ago was actually a republic, they put a king back on the throne in 1815. Spain and the Netherlands are the only two examples I can find of European nations returning to monarchy though. It’s undergone a precipitous decline pretty much everyone else, for the reasons you mentioned.
